A chimpanzee with a smoking habit has been rescued from a zoo in Lebanon, a country with few animal rights laws.

Omega, who's aged 12 and weighs 60kg (9st 7lb), is heading
to a sanctuary in Brazil – the first time he will see a tree or other
chimps.

‘The chimp still regularly smokes,’ said a spokesperson for
activist group Animals Lebanon. ‘If someone throws him a cigarette, he’d
pick it up straight away.’

During his younger years, Omega was put to work entertaining
people in a local restaurant and he was made to smoke cigarettes and
serve water pipes to customers.

After he grew stronger, he was locked up and taken to a zoo
where, for the past ten years, he has lived in a cage measuring 430
square feet.

Other animals found at the zoo, including seven baboons, a
hyena and various bird species, are being sent to new homes within
Lebanon.

Animals Lebanon is now urging officials in the country to sign up to international animal rights conventions.
